Warm Spiced Apple Smoothie
As seen in my article on @YorkRegion and my Metroland / Torstar Column: RENATA’S TABLE: Warm spiced apple smoothie makes you warm and cosy
Autumn is apple time. Whether you go to a local orchard and pick them or buy these delicious orbs from the grocery store, apples are at their peak. Here is a different, very tasty and quick recipe to include healthy apples into your day – Warm Spiced Apple Smoothie!
With the weather getting cooler, we all crave warm and cozy and this smoothie is a perfect combination of both. It is an ideal healthy breakfast or snack, with cinnamon and cloves the warming spices. Heating the milk and water before blending, results in a soothing beverage that warms you from within.
Apples are the star of this smoothie and combined with the other ingredients creates a healthy, nutritious mix of protein, fibre and healthy fat to sustain you through the morning or to chase away that afternoon slump.
Apples are a rich source of antioxidants, are low in fat, sodium and cholesterol and are a good source of vitamin C and fibre from pectin in the apple skin that aids in digestion. Recent research has shown that components in apples support and enhance the production of new brain cells, supporting learning, memory and cognitive health.
As always, when you make this recipe, I would love to see your creation so please post a photo of your Warm Spiced Apple Smoothie goodness and tag my IG account #RenataCollective or leave a comment with your thoughts
Prep Time: 5 minutes / Makes: 2 generous servings
Ingredients
2 Small Apples or 1 Medium Apple – no need to peel, just core and dice
½ Cup Milk – Dairy or Plant Based
½ Cup Water
¼ Cup Yogurt, Kefir or Cottage Cheese
¼ Cup Oats – Large Flake or Quick Oats
1½ Tablespoons Maple Syrup, Honey or Coconut Sugar
1 Tablespoon Hemp Hearts or Flax Meal - optional
1 Tablespoon All-Natural Peanut Butter or Another Nut or Seed Butter of Your Choice – optional but I strongly recommend it!
1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
¼ teaspoon Ground Cloves
Pinch of Sea Salt
How It’s Made
In a microwave safe measuring cup or in a small pot on the stove top, heat the milk and water until hot – about 1 and a half to 2 minutes in the microwave.
Core and dice the apples – leave the skin on for the fibre benefit – they blend in smoothly.
Add the apples and hot milk/water to a blender – a personal size blender is perfect for this. You can also use a hand-held immersion blender but it may not get as smooth.
Add the remaining ingredients.
Blend until smooth – at least one minute on high.
Pour into a pretty cup or glass and sprinkle a pinch of cinnamon on top. If you are on-the-go, pour into a thermos-style bottle to take with you.
Refrigerate leftovers – they are delicious reheated or cold.
Enjoy!
