Sprouting Seeds 101
If you come into my kitchen, you will always see either the sprouting jar by the sink growing these little gems of goodness or the grown sprouts in the fridge being used every day in one way or another – either as a quick snack right from the jar, on a sandwich, salad or as a garnish for a meal. So healthy, very delicious and easy to grow! I love microgreens as well, but those I buy when I want to have them in the fridge, as I don’t have the space for the trays you need to grow them. They are also more labour intensive, which I don’t wish to do either!
I did some research of sprouts vs microgreens – available here if you are interested! The internet is also loaded with info on each!
Growing sprouts results in a very healthy food. They become rich in enzymes and phytochemicals, they have many vitamins and minerals that when sprouted increases and the protein in sprouts becomes more digestible and therefore more bio-available for our health and wellbeing.
Here is my step-by-step on how I grow spouts!
As always, when you make your sprouts, I would love to see your bounty so please post a photo of your Sprouting Seeds goodness and tag my IG account #RenataCollective or leave a comment with your thoughts!
Prep Time: 5 Minutes / Wait Time: 4-5 days / Makes: ~3-4 Cups
What you will need:
A wide-mouthed jar - a mason jar works well
A piece of cheese cloth or a small clean tea towel or new dish cloth
A rubber band
OR a sprouting jar – available at most health food stores – they are not expensive and are very handy!
A package of sprouting seeds - also available at health food stores - so many varieties are available to try!
Ingredients
2 Tablespoons of the seeds
Filtered water daily
How It’s Made
Rinse out your jar.
Add 2 Tablespoons of the seeds you have chosen to the jar.
Cover the seeds with water.
If you are using a mason jar - place the cheesecloth or tea towel or dishcloth over the jar opening and secure tightly with the rubber band. If using the sprouting jar, just close the jar with the meshed lid.
Swirl the seeds in the water and drain.
Cover the seeds again with water and let this sit with the jar upright for 8-12 hours. I do mine in the evening and let them sit overnight. Longer is fine too if you let them sit for 18-24 hours.
After the seeds have soaked, drain out the water well through the cloth covering.
Place the jar on its side in a darkish spot, away from direct sunlight on the jar.
Morning and night, rinse and drain the seeds/sprouts.
Soon you will see little tails sprouting and then in the next days they will fill the jar.
When they are at that full jar state, I like to place them into direct sunlight, if it’s sunny, to green up a bit.
Keep your sprouts in the fridge – either in the jar they grew in or in a container where air can still circulate.
Enjoy!
