Herb Bombas
Herb Bombas, or Herb Bombs, are frozen wonders of savory goodness, fresh frozen from your garden or your herb haul when grocery shopping. If you are like me, I will buy a bundle of fresh herbs (the ones that I don’t grow in pots or in my garden) and they go bad before I can use them up – even though I wrap them in a damp tea towel and keep them in the fridge as you are supposed to do to keep them fresh longer. Same for you? Here is a great solution to keep those herbs from going bad, keep them for future cooking extravaganza, and feel good about not wasting both the herbs and money throwing them out when they have gone all wilted, wet and slimy.
So easy to do! There are two ways to make herb bombas – the method is slightly different but the outcome is the same so pick which one works for you.
Prep Time: 5 minutes / Cook Time: no cook time / Makes: as many ice cubes Herb Bombas as you have herbs for and wish to make.
Ingredients
Fresh Herbs - store bought or from your garden, washed and destemmed
How It’s Made
Take a mixture of fresh herbs, or a single herb – in the photo I have rosemary, chives, thyme, oregano and basil as my mixture, and lovage as my single herb, and give them a chop.
Method 1 - we’ll work with a mixture of herbs for these instructions but you can do this with a single herb as well. Put the mixture of herbs in your food processor and whirl to a fine consistency. Spoon some mixture into ice cube trays - don’t pack it too tight or you won’t have much water in each to freeze effectively. Fill each cube with water and freeze. Once frozen, pop them out and put them in a baggie to store in your freezer for when you need the taste of fresh herbs in your cooking. Simple remove one or more and add to your cooking!
Method 2 - we’ll work with a single herb – in the photos I used lovage as I have a forest of it in my backyard garden. Put the single herb into your food processor and whirl to chop the herb down. Add water to cover the now chopped herb in the food processor and whirl again – 20 seconds should do the trick. Now pour, or spoon, the herb water mixture into ice cube trays or silicon muffin liners in a muffin tin (as in the photos) and freeze. Once frozen, pop them out and put them into a baggie to store in your freezer for when you want a blast of flavour from this one herb in the deliciousness you are cooking.
