Ketchup Home-Made (no cook)

Have you ever made home-made ketchup? It’s such an easy thing to make and so much healthier (and imo tastier) than the store-bought ones – unless you can buy an organic one. This recipe has been in my repertoire for years – I believe the original idea of making my own ketchup came from a ages-old canning recipe book my mother-in-law gave me years ago, that was given to her from an aunt years before, that had an option for the no-cook version of ketchup. My recipe has evolved over the years to what it is now. Hope you try it!

Prep time: 10 minutes / Total time: 2 hours, 10 minutes / Makes 3+ cups (approx.) cups

Ingredients:

  • 3 – 156ml (5.5 oz) cans Tomato Paste

  • ½ cup Apple Cider Vinegar (or white vinegar)

  • 2 Tbsp Coconut Sugar (or cane sugar)

  • 2 Tbsp Molasses

  • 1 tsp Sea Salt

  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder

  • 1 Tbsp Onion Powder

  • 1 tsp Mustard Powder

  • 1 pinch Cinnamon

  • 1 pinch Allspice

  • 1 pinch Turmeric

  • 1 pinch Cayenne Pepper

  • 1 pinch Ginger (optional)

  • 1 pinch Cumin (optional)

  • ½ cup Water

  • 1 tsp Arrowroot Powder (for thickening, optional) mixed with 1 Tbsp water

How It’s Made:

  • Add all the ingredients (except the arrowroot powder mixed with water) to a blender or a food processor and blend until completely mixed together and smooth, minimum 2 minutes.

  • Let it sit for 5 minutes to allow the flavours and the consistency to settle a bit.

  • Taste the ketchup and season more as you wish.

  • If it is too thick, add another ¼ cup water and mix again.

  • If it is too liquid (runny), add the arrowroot powder mixed with water and mix again.

  • Pour the ketchup into a clean jar and put into the fridge for at least 2 hours to let flavors blend together.

  • Store this deliciousness in the fridge. Give the jar a shake or a stir before using, as with regular commercial ketchup, it can separate.

Variations:

  • For a spicy ketchup, add ½ tsp chili powder, ½ tsp hot sauce of your choice and ½ tsp cayenne (instead of the pinch indicated above).  You can also remove a portion of the finished ketchup and add these spices in to have 2 versions - a regular and a more spicy ketchup.
